Pho

Funny because it sounds a bit like poo! OK, so enough of the childish stuff, this is the legendary soupy noodle dish served all over Vietnam. Amazingly it is a relatively new dish originating in Northern Vietnam in the early 20th century. Since then it has traveled from Vietnam to become the most iconic vietnamese dish.

Banh Mi of Vietnam is the most famous, but there is a variation of the dish in Cambodia. OK, so it it is a baguette, but when you add stuff like papaya salad and foes gras it become Banh Mi. The second most iconic dish in Vietnam, and a great snack at any time.

Balut –

Another dish with varieties throughout Asia. Originally from China it is a fertilized duck egg! Heard the chicken and the egg thing? This is halfway between the two. Often described as one of the grossest snacks around it is pretty good and is only made better with beer, salt and vinegar, in that order.

We have gone all Korea is one on this and are treating Korea as one big race of people!

Not specifically a street food, particularly in North Korea, but on the Korean peninsula and in China (liang pi) there is a rich culture of cold noodles. A perfect easy snack as you keep them cold rather than warm! Easy. They are all extremely spicy as a rule.

Best Street Foods of Asia – Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore Satay

Satay is a street food sensation that out will find throughout South-East Asia. Originally though it was from Indonesia, but is equally popular and profound in Singapore and Malaysia. Chunks of meat are skewered and grilled, but the kicker is the amazing peanut sauce that it is served with. Meat varies, hell it can even be done with tofu, but chicken satay is where it is at.

Kou Rou

Kou Rou basically means barbecue meat. And it really is as simple as that. Of curs eat is more than just meat, with all kinds of vegetables also getting the treatment. I particularly love the BBQ potatoes, which also mot come out like chips. Best served spicy and with the “best beer in the world”, Snow beer (really not the best). You Rou is all about the social side.

Mala tang

Mala is a Sichuan style hot sauce and tang means soup. This is like the aforementioned Kao Rou, but instead of doing BBQ the meat is boiled and then served to you in a pay broth. Found throughout China, but I have a particular fancy for Shenzhen and Dandong styles.

Miso Ramen

You have to give kudos to the country that invented sushi and sahimi, but these tend to be more on the epxsnive side than your average street food. Ramen though is the quintessential Japanese product, cheap noodles that just need water added. These make them the perfect street food and it is a big deal in Japan. The miso broth is what makes this very Japanese and a standout dish. Just don’t ague about if it originate in China, or not.

Fried noodles are a quintessential Chinese dish for sure, but they are available everywhere. The best thing about them is perhaps that every country has its own take on them. I am particularly fond of them in China, but also in Cambodia. A real safe go to dish if you are hungry and need a quick fix.
