Where were you when 9-11 happened? Or as we say 11-9. OK lets not split hairs, but it kind of made things easier that the terrorists did 7-7 in London, which makes life simpler, Another day people remember where they were, at least in the UK.
I remember my dad saying that his generation remembered where they were for moon landing and the assignation of Kennedy. For our generation it was 9-11….
Where was I when 9-11 happened?
Unlike the moon landing or the assignation of JFK 9-11 was not a monetary affair, so I remember being at work initially, I used to look after kids after school, then heading to Dover and Calais for a cigarette and booze run. And it was here that the majority of the action I saw, particular on the ferry back to Dover from Calais.
Why was I in Calais? Cigarettes where much cheaper in France than the UK, so lets just say there were economics involved. I remember the cafes in Calais all showing it live, but mostly it was the ferry where I got the action.
This was a P&O ferry, not to be confused with P&O Cruise lines who I later worked for! Ironically I was on the ships when 7-7 happened.

The cay thing was the it took about 5 hours extra for our boat to dock, which meant we were literally stuck out at sea. It was weather rather than terrorism related, but it still felt decidedly eerie. WE eventually docked with bags full of cigarettes and went back to Strood by train from the white cliffs of Dover.
